Delete vs Deactivate: What 11 Social Apps Keep, and for How Long
Eleven social apps compared: which offer a pause, how many days you can undo a deletion (7 to 30, or none), and what survives: posts, usernames, and subscriptions.
Leaving a social app is two different acts that the apps name differently and treat differently: a pause that hides you, and a deletion that eventually erases you. Across eleven services, read from their own help pages on October 7, 2026, the rules range from Pinterest’s seven-day deletion to Meta’s thirty days to cancel plus up to ninety to finish, from Snapchat’s two-stage thirty plus thirty to Reddit, Telegram, and WhatsApp, where confirming is the end. Several also leave a paid subscription running after the account is gone. This guide puts every platform’s pause option, undo window, and leftovers in one table, in the companies’ own words.
The quick answer
- A pause exists on: Facebook and Instagram (deactivate), X (deactivate, but it is the first step of deletion), TikTok (Deactivate or delete account), Pinterest (deactivate), LinkedIn (hibernate). Discord, Reddit, Telegram, and WhatsApp offer deletion only
- Undo windows for deletion: Facebook and Instagram 30 days to cancel, X 30 days, Snapchat 30 days to reactivate, Discord 15 days, LinkedIn 14 days “in most cases,” Pinterest 7 days. Reddit, Telegram, and WhatsApp: none
- Finishing takes longer than the window: Meta says deletion “may take up to 90 days” after it starts, LinkedIn deletes closed-account data “within 30 days of account closure,” Reddit’s process “commences within 90 days”
- Subscriptions survive: X says deactivating “does not automatically cancel” a paid subscription; Reddit says “deleting your account won’t cancel your subscription”; LinkedIn goes the other way and cancels Premium the moment you hibernate
- Two traps: logging in to check cancels the process on Pinterest and reactivates Snapchat and X; Telegram tells your contacts you left
Key facts at a glance
| Platform | Pause option | Deletion can be undone for | After that |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deactivate: profile hidden, nothing deleted; Pages only you control are deactivated too | 30 days (varies by region) | Up to 90 days to delete content; backup copies may remain | |
| Deactivate: photos, comments, likes hidden; once a week at most | 30 days (varies by region) | Up to 90 days to delete content; backup copies may remain | |
| X | Deactivate is step one of deletion | 30 days by logging back in | Account deleted, username released, sent DMs deleted |
| Snapchat | None separate: delete means deactivate first | 30 days by logging in | Deleted after 30 more days; data download window 30 days |
| TikTok | Deactivate or delete account, in Settings | Not stated on the support page | Not stated |
| Deactivate: profile and boards hidden | 7 days (California: an extra step) | Account and personal data permanently deleted | |
| Discord | None | 15 days “pending deletion” | Permanently deleted; banned accounts cannot be restored |
| None | None: “it can’t be reactivated” | Username unavailable; posts stay, disassociated; process starts within 90 days | |
| Hibernate: reactivate after 24 hours | 14 days “in most cases” | Endorsements, invitations, followings, groups not recovered; data deleted within 30 days | |
| Telegram | None, but inactivity self-destruct timer (default 18 months) | None: “irreversible” | Contacts who have your number are notified; they keep their copies |
| None | None: “irreversible” | Message history cannot be restored; back up first |

Facebook and Instagram: hide now, delete slowly
Meta runs the two the same way. Deactivation is a hiding operation: on Facebook, “People won’t be able to see or go to your Facebook profile.” and “Your photos, posts and videos won’t be deleted.” Instagram’s version hides “your photos, comments and likes” until you log back in, with one limit: “you can only deactivate your profile once a week.” Facebook adds a side effect worth knowing if you run a Page: “Pages that only you control will also be deactivated.”
Deletion has a cancel window and a longer tail. Facebook: “If it’s been less than 30 days since you initiated the deletion, you can cancel your account deletion.” Instagram: “After 30 days of your profile deletion request, your profile and all your information will be permanently deleted”. Both then say “It may take up to 90 days” to delete everything you posted, and that “Copies of your information may remain after the 90 days in backup storage” used for disaster recovery. Both also carry the same footnote: “The number of days that you can cancel an account deletion varies by region.” Instagram adds that no one can do it for you: “For security reasons, we can’t delete a profile for you.”
X: deactivation is the deletion
X has no standalone pause. Its help page says “Deactivation lasts 30 days.” and “If you do not access your account within the 30-day deactivation period, your account is deleted and your username will no longer be associated with your account.” Logging in during the 30 days reactivates the account. Messages survive the pause and not the deletion: “During the 30-day deactivation period, your direct messages won’t be deleted.” Deactivating also leaves money moving: the page says it does not automatically cancel a paid subscription such as Premium, which you manage “through the platform where you originally subscribed.” Our social subscriptions comparison lists what those tiers cost, and our guides to canceling on iPhone and on Google Play cover store-billed plans.
Snapchat: two 30-day clocks
Snapchat’s delete request starts a pause: “This will deactivate an account for 30 days, during which time the account can still be reactivated. After 30 more days, the account will be permanently deleted.” Reactivation is by logging in with the username, and “Only you can reactivate your deactivated account; Snapchat Support cannot reactivate it for you.” Your data has its own clock: “After you deactivate or delete your account, you will have 30 days to download your data.” Snapchat says that if you neither log in nor download within the first 30 days, the data is permanently deleted after 60 days. India has longer periods on the same page.
TikTok: a choice in Settings, no number on the page
TikTok’s support article gives the path, “Tap Account, then tap Deactivate or delete account, and follow the instructions to delete your account. Alternatively, you can choose to deactivate your account.” It does not say how long a deactivation lasts or how long a deletion can be reversed; it points to the privacy policy for data handling, and that policy speaks in general retention terms rather than days. Treat any specific TikTok grace period you read elsewhere as unconfirmed by TikTok’s own support page.
Pinterest: seven days, and do not log in to check
Pinterest is the fastest here. “When you delete your account, your public profile is immediately deactivated. Your account and personal data are permanently deleted in 7 days.” You can change your mind before then, with an extra step for California users. The deactivate option is the pause: “Your profile and boards will not be visible unless you reactivate your account,” and the email and username “still remain tied to that account.” The page carries the clearest version of a trap that applies on X and Snapchat too: “Do not log in to check if your account is still active as this will reactivate your account.”
Discord: 15 days pending
Discord says “Discord account deletions take 15 days to process.” The account sits in a “pending deletion” state, and “you must restore your account within the 15-day period before your account is permanently deleted.” Discord also notes that accounts deleted because they were banned or disabled cannot be restored. Stop paid plans separately; our Discord Nitro cancel guide covers that.
Reddit: no undo, and your posts stay
Reddit is the bluntest: “Once you delete your account, it can’t be reactivated, your username will become unavailable” and you lose access to your post and comment history. The posts themselves do not vanish. Reddit describes deletion as “disassociating your username from post history, comment history, karma, cake day, avatar” and the rest of your profile; delete individual posts first if you want them gone. Two timing details: “we initiate a deletion process which commences within 90 days,” and “deleting your account won’t cancel your subscription,” so cancel Reddit Premium before you delete.
LinkedIn: hibernate, or close with a 14-day reopen
LinkedIn offers a real pause: “Hibernate your account as an alternative to closing it. You can reactivate your account 24 hours after you’ve hibernated it.” The cost is immediate for paying members: “your subscription will be automatically cancelled immediately when you hibernate your account,” and “Any promotional pricing you previously had may no longer be honored.” Closing is reversible for a short time: “You can reopen your account in most cases if it’s been closed less than 14 days,” but endorsements and recommendations, pending invitations, followings, and group memberships are not recovered. The retention page gives the deletion clock: information “will be removed from LinkedIn’s production system within 24 hours,” and LinkedIn will “de-identify any logs or other backup information within 30 days of account closure.” Our LinkedIn Premium cancel guide covers stopping the subscription without closing the account.
Telegram: irreversible, with a side effect
Telegram’s FAQ: “Termination of a Telegram account is irreversible.” Signing up again makes you a new user with no history, and “People, who have your phone number in their contacts, will be notified.” Your contacts keep their copies of your messages. The pause-like option is passive: “If you stop using Telegram and don’t come online for at least 18 months, your account will be deleted along with all messages, media, contacts and every other piece of data you store in the Telegram cloud.” and “You can change the exact period after which your inactive account will self-destruct in Settings.”
WhatsApp: back up first
WhatsApp’s help page leaves no window: “Deleting your account is irreversible, and we can’t undo it even if you delete your account by accident.” and “Once your account is deleted, your message history can’t be restored.” The only protection is before the fact: create a backup or export your chat history first.
Where the documents disagree or leave gaps
“30 days” means different things. On Facebook and Instagram it is the window to cancel; on X it is the whole deactivation that ends in deletion; on Snapchat it is a first stage followed by a second 30 days. The same number on three help pages describes three mechanisms.
Meta’s window is regional. Both Meta pages say “The number of days that you can cancel an account deletion varies by region,” so the 30 days is the US reading, not a universal one.
Deleted is not finished. Meta’s 90 days, LinkedIn’s 30, and Reddit’s “commences within 90 days” all describe work that continues after your undo window closes. Backup copies are called out by Meta.
TikTok gives no figure. Its support page names the setting and nothing more; the privacy policy describes retention without a grace period.
Subscriptions go three ways. X and Reddit leave paid plans running after deactivation or deletion; LinkedIn cancels Premium the instant you hibernate. None of the three refunds the remainder on its help page.
Before you press delete
This is a sequence, not a recommendation:
- Download your data first. Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp point to an export on the pages above, and the others offer one in their settings; Snapchat limits the window to 30 days after the request. Our data download comparison lists the click path, wait time, and pickup window for all 11 apps
- Cancel paid plans separately where the page says they survive (X, Reddit) and expect them to end where it says they do (LinkedIn hibernation)
- Decide pause or delete by the undo window: 30 days on Meta and X, 15 on Discord, 14 on LinkedIn, 7 on Pinterest, none on Reddit, Telegram, and WhatsApp
- Stay logged out during the window on Pinterest, Snapchat, and X; logging in restarts the account
- Check the leftovers: Reddit posts stay online without your name, Telegram contacts are notified, Facebook Pages you alone control go dark with you

Bottom line
As of October 7, 2026, the safe reading of these eleven help pages is: pause where a pause exists, download before you delete, cancel subscriptions yourself, and count the undo window in that platform’s own days, from 7 on Pinterest to 30 on Meta and X, with none at all on Reddit, Telegram, and WhatsApp. The help page you confirm on is the one that binds; these rules change, and Meta says its own window varies by region.
Wording quoted from the help pages linked above, read on October 7, 2026. Account deletion rules differ by country and change without notice, so re-read the platform’s page before you confirm. This is general information, not legal advice.
