How to Cancel Planet Fitness: Online, In Person, or by Certified Mail

Planet Fitness cancellation still usually means your home club: in person or by certified letter, though some accounts can now cancel online. Here is every method, the 7-day billing rule, and how to avoid the annual fee.

Published

Planet Fitness makes joining take two minutes online, but canceling usually goes through your home club: in person or by mail, with online cancellation available only for some accounts. Here is every method that works, in order of least effort.

The quick answer

  • First, try online: log in to the Planet Fitness Member Portal and look for a cancellation option; availability depends on your home club’s location and your membership type
  • Otherwise: cancel in person at your home club (ask for the cancellation form) or send a certified letter to that club
  • Phone and email cancellations are not accepted
  • Timing: cancel at least 7 days before your billing date to avoid another monthly charge, and check your agreement for the annual fee date
  • Keep proof: a copy of the form or the certified mail receipt

Diagram: three ways to cancel Planet Fitness, online where available, in person at your home club, or by certified mail

Method 1: Check for online cancellation

Log in at the Planet Fitness Member Portal (or the PF app) and look under your membership options. Some clubs and membership types now support canceling directly online; many still do not. If you see the option, follow the prompts and save the confirmation. If not, use one of the methods below. Club-specific policies are set by each location, which you can confirm via Planet Fitness customer service.

Method 2: Cancel in person at your home club

  1. Go to the club where you signed up (your “home club”; other locations cannot process it)
  2. Ask the front desk for a cancellation form
  3. Fill it out, sign it, and request a copy for your records

This is the fastest guaranteed method. Bring a photo ID, and if possible go early in the month so the 7-day billing cutoff is not an issue.

Method 3: Cancel by certified mail

If visiting is not practical (for example, you moved), send a written cancellation letter to your home club. Include your full name, date of birth, PF member ID (on your key tag), address, and a clear statement that you are canceling. Send it by certified mail with return receipt so you have delivery proof. Allow time for processing before your next billing date.

The two fees to watch

  • Monthly dues: you must cancel at least 7 days before your monthly billing date, or you will be charged for one more month
  • Annual fee: most agreements bill a separate annual fee on a set date; if you cancel close to it, you may still be charged. The exact date is in your membership agreement, and the club can tell you

If you are on a commitment contract (some $1-down offers include a minimum term), a buyout fee may apply before the term ends. Check your agreement.

If the charges keep coming

Ask the club for written confirmation of the cancellation date. If billing continues anyway, dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer using your cancellation proof. That proof is exactly why the form copy or certified mail receipt matters.
