How to Cancel Equinox: Five Ways, Freeze Rules, and What Expires

Equinox lists five ways to cancel, and notice periods vary by state. Unused sessions and perks expire with the membership, and PT subscriptions bill weekly.

Published Updated

Equinox’s own FAQ says “You may cancel in club with a club manager, via mail as described in your Membership Agreement, by emailing Cancellations@Equinox.com, by phone through Equinox Concierge, or by logging into your account on Equinox.com.” That is five doors, and any of them can end a membership. What decides your last bill is not the door but two things the FAQ leaves to your contract: the notice period, which the FAQ says varies by state, and what happens to everything you prepaid. This guide covers each way in, what expires when the membership does, the personal training and Pilates subscriptions that bill separately, and the freeze rules.

The quick answer

  • Five listed ways to cancel: “in club with a club manager,” “via mail as described in your Membership Agreement,” “by emailing Cancellations@Equinox.com,” “by phone through Equinox Concierge,” or “by logging into your account on Equinox.com”
  • The notice period is in your agreement. The FAQ says “Notice periods vary by state and in some states, there may be additional cancellation methods available, please review your Membership Agreement for requirements specific to your Membership.” For a copy, it says to contact Concierge@equinox.com
  • No cancellation fee is stated on the FAQ or the member policies page. Your signed agreement controls
  • Unused sessions do not survive. “All Sessions expire upon the termination of your membership or six (6) months after the date of purchase of the sessions, whichever comes earlier”
  • Complimentary items die with the membership, and overnight locker and laundry services “will immediately terminate”
  • Subscription programs are separate. A Pilates or personal training subscription “will automatically renew weekly” until you cancel it, and a spa subscription renews monthly
  • A freeze is not a free pause. It is not retroactive, and locker and laundry fees keep running
  • After a price increase, the FAQ says “In certain states, if you cancel soon after an increase in Membership Dues, you may have additional rights”

Diagram: five ways to cancel Equinox, by email to Cancellations at Equinox, by phone through Concierge, through your Equinox.com login or with a club manager in person, or by mail as the Membership Agreement describes, with the rules that notice periods vary by state and unused sessions expire when the membership ends

Step 1: Find the notice period in your agreement

Equinox does not publish a single notice period, because the number depends on your state and your agreement. Get your Membership Agreement in front of you before you pick a date. The freeze answer in the FAQ gives the route: for “a copy of your Membership Agreement, please contact Concierge@equinox.com”.

Look for three things in it: the notice you must give before the billing date, whether a mailed notice has its own address and deadline, and any fee or minimum term. The FAQ and the policies page do not name a cancellation fee, so do not assume one exists or that one does not.

Step 2: Pick the way that leaves a record

Email. The FAQ lists “by emailing Cancellations@Equinox.com.” Email is the easiest to prove, because the message and the reply are dated. Put your full name, the email address on the account, and your membership Barcode ID in it. The FAQ says new online accounts need “your membership Barcode ID,” which you can get from the front desk, so the number identifies you. Ask for a written reply that states the date the cancellation takes effect, and do not treat silence as confirmation.

Your account. The FAQ lists “by logging into your account on Equinox.com.” The EQX+ app has a Membership & Billing screen where the FAQ says you can view your membership status and your payment on file, but the FAQ does not say the app cancels a membership. We could not test the online flow, because it needs a member login. If you find a cancel option, screenshot the confirmation page.

Phone. The FAQ lists “by phone through Equinox Concierge” and, in its subscription answers, says “Visit Equinox.com for the current Concierge phone number.” The Contact Us page lists 866-332-6549, “Monday through Friday, 8am to 8pm EST,” beside the concierge@equinox.com address. A call leaves no record, so follow it with an email that restates what was agreed and the date.

In club. The FAQ says “in club with a club manager,” not at any desk, so ask for the manager and ask for something in writing with the date. If the manager is out, email instead of making a second trip.

By mail. The FAQ says “via mail as described in your Membership Agreement,” which means the address and the deadline come from your contract. Do not borrow an address from elsewhere: the Contact Us page lists a general mailing address at 31 Hudson Yards in New York, and the Pilates and personal training subscription answer gives a different one, “One Park Avenue, Mezz. Floor, New York, NY 10016.” Use certified mail with a receipt, and mail early.

Before the cancellation date: use it or lose it

Canceling ends more than the monthly dues. Equinox’s member policies page says:

  • Training, Pilates, and nutrition Sessions: “All Sessions expire upon the termination of your membership or six (6) months after the date of purchase of the sessions, whichever comes earlier.” The same page says “All sales of Sessions are final and non-refundable, except as required by law” and that if you have unused Sessions when you cancel, “you will not be entitled to a refund except for certain limited circumstances expressly set forth in your Membership Agreement”
  • Spa treatments: “All Treatments expire six (6) months after the date of purchase”
  • Complimentary items (free sessions, credits, rewards): they “expire ninety (90) days after the date of issuance” and “will become null and void upon any cancellation of your membership”
  • Overnight lockers and laundry: “such services will immediately terminate upon the cancellation or termination of your Membership Agreement”

So the order matters. Book and use your remaining sessions and credits before the date your cancellation takes effect, not after. If your agreement gives you a notice period, count it from the day you send the notice, then work backward to the last day you can use a session.

Pilates, personal training, and spa subscriptions bill separately

Canceling the membership does not automatically cancel a subscription you bought in a studio. The FAQ describes two kinds.

Session pack auto-renew in the app. “In the Equinox+ app you may turn on auto-renew for Pilates or Personal Training sessions,” and packs “will renew automatically once your inventory reaches 0 and you have at least 1 session scheduled.” To stop it: “Turn off auto-renew to avoid future session replenishments anytime in your Membership & Billing settings. No refunds or partial credits for unused sessions unless required by law.”

In-club subscription programs. “In club, you may purchase a Pilates or Personal Training Subscription Program with an initial 6- or 12-week commitment period. After the Commitment Period, your session pack will automatically renew weekly, and Equinox will charge your payment method each week for the number of sessions selected until you cancel.” A spa program works the same way on a monthly cycle. For both, the FAQ says “Please review your Subscription Agreement for applicable cancellation terms” and lists its own cancellation routes: in person at the club listed on the first page of the Subscription Agreement, by mail to the One Park Avenue address above, by phone through Concierge, or by email at Concierge@Equinox.com.

Two practical consequences follow. A subscription is its own agreement with its own commitment period, so ending it inside that period is a question for your Subscription Agreement. And if you cancel only the membership, check your statement the next week for a session charge; sessions “may be used only during the term of your membership,” but a weekly charge can still post until the subscription itself is canceled.

Freezing instead of canceling

The FAQ says “If you are going on an extended vacation or unable to use the club for a brief period, we recommend that you freeze your membership, instead of cancelling.” The member policies are narrower than that sentence sounds. A freeze is available “if you are medically unable to use any Club or for another statutorily required reason as described in your Membership Agreement,” and for anything else the page says to contact the Front Desk or Concierge, “including for non-medical reasons.”

The rules that cost money if you miss them:

  • Not retroactive. “retroactive Freezes are not permitted,” so request it before the billing date, not after
  • Who is excluded. “You are not eligible to Freeze if you have a past-due/overdue balance or your membership is otherwise not in good standing with Equinox, if you joined as part of a payroll deducted or subsidized corporate membership program, or if you have a short-term membership”
  • Extras keep running. “any locker rental and/or laundry service fees, as well as expiration dates for personal training and Pilates sessions and spa treatments, are not suspended during any Freeze”
  • No visits. If you check in while frozen, “Equinox may revert your membership to active status, without further notice to you, and a prorate of your membership dues will be added to your membership account”
  • How to ask. “In-person at any Club in your membership class,” where “You will be required to complete a Freeze request form,” or by emailing Concierge@Equinox.com. For medical freezes, Equinox “may require you to provide documentation,” such as a letter from a licensed medical provider

To end a freeze, the FAQ says “You can unfreeze your membership at your local club or by emailing Concierge@Equinox.com”. Our guide to pausing a subscription instead of canceling covers when a pause beats an exit.

Coming back later

If you cancel and change your mind, the FAQ says “You can reactivate your membership at your local club or by emailing Concierge@Equinox.com”. It does not say whether your old rate is available, so ask before you assume one.

What the New York settlement requires of Equinox

On May 30, 2025, the New York attorney general announced a settlement with Equinox Group, which runs Equinox, Equinox+, and SoulCycle, over cancellations. The press release says the company “must pay $600,000 in penalties, change its subscription practices, and offer refunds to subscribers who tried to cancel their membership but could not.” The signed assurance of discontinuance adds that “Beginning July 28, 2024, Equinox established an online cancellation option for all New York members.”

Three of its going-forward terms are useful when you cancel. Equinox agreed that cancellation requests can start “in a single online visit,” that it would “not erect unreasonable barriers to cancellation,” and that within 72 hours of a cancellation it would send “a cancellation confirmation to the Consumer that includes the date the Consumer cancelled the Subscription” plus the date the subscription ends. If your confirmation is missing either date, reply to it and ask for both, in writing.

Two limits. The agreement is between Equinox and the state, and the confirmation paragraph does not say it is limited to New York, but we cannot tell how Equinox applies it elsewhere, so treat it as leverage rather than a guarantee. And the money is closed: the press release says customers “must email Equinox Group by August 2, 2025,” so no refund claim is open now. If you live in the city, New York City added its own rule on October 1, 2026, which our NYC click-to-cancel guide walks through, including the complaint route.

If you are charged after canceling

  1. Match the dates. Compare the date of your written notice with the billing date and the notice period in your agreement. A notice that arrived inside the notice period can still produce one more bill
  2. Check the subscriptions. A Pilates, personal training, or spa subscription is a separate charge. Look at the line item name, not just the amount
  3. Write to Concierge at concierge@equinox.com with your proof. For balance questions the FAQ also points to “your club’s General Manager”
  4. Dispute only with proof. If a charge posted after a dated, written cancellation, your card issuer or bank can review it, and our bank dispute guide covers the steps. Our guide to a canceled subscription that is still charging lists what to keep

How do I cancel my Equinox membership? Use any of the five ways the FAQ lists, and get written confirmation of the effective date. Email Cancellations@Equinox.com is the easiest to prove.

Can I cancel Equinox online? The FAQ lists “by logging into your account on Equinox.com.” We could not test the flow without a member login.

Can I cancel Equinox by phone? Yes, “by phone through Equinox Concierge.” The Contact Us page lists 866-332-6549, Monday through Friday, 8am to 8pm EST.

How much notice does Equinox require? It depends on your state and your Membership Agreement. The FAQ says “Notice periods vary by state.”

Does Equinox charge a cancellation fee? The FAQ and the member policies page do not state one. Check your signed agreement.

What happens to my personal training sessions if I cancel? Sessions expire when the membership terminates, and unused sessions are not refunded except in the limited cases your agreement sets out.

Will my Pilates subscription stop when I cancel my membership? Do not assume so. The FAQ treats it as a separate subscription with its own cancellation routes.

Can I freeze Equinox instead? Possibly. The FAQ recommends a freeze for a vacation or a brief period, and the policies describe medical and statutory freezes. Contact the Front Desk or Concierge for other reasons.

Bottom line

Equinox lets you cancel in club with a manager, by mail, by email to Cancellations@Equinox.com, by phone through Concierge, or through your Equinox.com account. Pick the one that leaves a dated record, get the notice period from your Membership Agreement, and use your sessions and credits before the cancellation takes effect because they expire with the membership. Cancel any Pilates, personal training, or spa subscription separately, since those renew weekly or monthly until you do. If you only need a break, a freeze is possible for medical or statutory reasons and by request for others, but it is not retroactive and does not pause lockers, laundry, or session expiry.

Cancellation methods, the notice-period statement, the price-increase note, freeze and reactivation answers, and the subscription auto-renewal terms are quoted from the Equinox FAQ; Session, Treatment, complimentary item, locker, and freeze rules from the Equinox Member Policies page; the Concierge phone hours and mailing address from the Contact Us page. All three were read on October 3, 2026. We could not test the online cancellation flow, which requires a member login. Your Membership Agreement controls, and terms vary by state.
