Gemini Free Tier Loses Flash and Pro on October 9: How to Keep Access
Google moves Gemini users without a plan to Flash-Lite only on October 9, 2026, and AI Plus loses Pro. The before and after by plan, and what it costs to keep each model.
Google’s help center now says that Gemini users on a personal account without a Google AI plan will be limited to the Flash-Lite model starting October 9, 2026, and that Google AI Plus subscribers at $4.99 a month will lose the Pro model on a date Google sends them by email. AI Pro at $19.99 and AI Ultra from $99.99 keep all three models. This guide puts the current access table and the post-change table side by side, both from Google’s own pages read on October 7, 2026, and lays out what each step up costs. If you compare the plans across companies, our ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini comparison has the full price ladder.
The quick answer
- Without a plan: Flash-Lite only from October 9. Today’s table lists Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro as all available
- AI Plus ($4.99 a month): keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, loses Pro. Google says “you should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you”
- AI Pro ($19.99 a month): no model change. Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro, with “4x higher than standard limits”
- AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99 a month): no model change, and the only plan with Deep Think, per both help pages
- Limits do not move: the usage multipliers (standard, 2x, 4x, 5x or 20x) and context windows (32k, 128k, 1 million tokens) read the same on both pages
- The one that still disagrees: the Google AI plans page on October 7 still lists “Access to 3.6 Flash” and “Varying access to 3.1 Pro” under Free

The models-today column is the Model Access table on Google’s limits page as read on October 7, 2026; the after-the-change column is the table on the change notice. Prices are from the US plans page the same day.

What the change notice says
The notice is a short help page titled Changes to Gemini model access and limits. Its first line sets the scope: “Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account.” Work and school accounts are not covered by it.
Two sentences carry the dates. “These changes will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th.” And for the cheapest paid plan: “For users with an AI Plus subscription, you should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you.” There is no single date for AI Plus, so two Plus subscribers may lose Pro on different days.
Below that is the table headed “Model availability after these changes take effect.” It has one checkmark for Without a plan (Flash-Lite), two for AI Plus (Flash-Lite and Flash), and three each for AI Pro and AI Ultra. The page adds two tips: “For each available model, you can also select the model’s effort level from low, medium, and high,” which raises quality but “will also use more of your limit,” and “If you have an AI Ultra subscription you’ll also have access to the Deep Think option for maximum parallel reasoning.”
It also records the last round of changes: “Starting on May 17, 2026 there were changes to usage limits and model availability for Gemini Apps for users over 18. These changes took effect for users under 18 on July 24, 2026.” October 9 is the third dated change this year.
What you have today, from the other help page
Google’s longer page, Gemini Apps limits & upgrades for Google AI subscribers, still shows the pre-change state. Its Model Access table lists Gemini 3 Flash-lite, Gemini 3 Flash, and Gemini 3 Pro with “Yes” in every cell for every plan, including “Without an AI Plan.” That is the table that changes on October 9.
The same page describes the three models. Flash-Lite “is an efficient workhorse model designed for speed. It’s ideal for everyday tasks like summarization and brainstorming.” Flash “balances speed and reasoning to solve a large variety of problems, from simple to complex.” Pro “excels at complex math and coding prompts with high performance and reasoning,” and “response time for Gemini 3 Pro prompts will take longer than if using other models.” So the free tier is losing the two models the page itself describes as the more capable ones, and keeping the one built for speed.
Two things on that page are not touched by the notice. Context windows stay at “32k tokens” without a plan, “128k tokens” on AI Plus, and “1 million tokens” on AI Pro and AI Ultra. And the usage table is identical on both pages: “Standard limits,” “2x higher than standard limits,” “4x higher than standard limits,” and “5x or 20x higher than AI Pro limits depending on your subscription.” The page also explains what happens at the ceiling for paying users: “If you have a Google AI subscription and reach your limit, you can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite.” After October 9, Flash-Lite is also where free users start.
Deep Think stays on Ultra, on paper
Both help pages put Deep Think on one plan. The limits page says “Deep think (AI Ultra only) provides maximum parallel reasoning,” adds that queries “generally can take a few minutes before seeing a response,” and notes “Deep think requires the Pro model.” The change notice repeats the Ultra-only line. The plans page lists Ultra as the tier with “first access to advanced features like Deep Think and Gemini Spark.”
A 9to5Google report on October 3 said AI Pro would also gain Deep Think. As of October 7, none of the three Google pages says that. Treat it as reported, not confirmed, until Google’s table changes.
What it costs to keep what you use
Google sells the models back in two steps, and the plans page is explicit about the price of each.
Keep Flash: $4.99 a month. Google AI Plus lists “$4.99 / month” and “Get 2x higher usage access than Free.” It also adds “400 GB of cloud storage across Gmail, Drive, and Photos” against the free tier’s “15 GB,” plus video generation, Daily Brief, and scheduled actions, which the limits page’s feature table shows as paid-only. If Flash was the model you used most, this is the cheapest way to keep it, and the Pro model goes away on Plus too, on the emailed date.
Keep Pro: $19.99 a month. Google AI Pro lists “$19.99 / month” with “Get 4x higher usage access than Free,” “5 TB of cloud storage across Gmail, Drive, and Photos,” a YouTube Premium Lite plan, and Google Home Premium Standard. One footnote matters if you already pay YouTube: “The YouTube Premium Lite plan included in this bundle won’t activate if you already have an equivalent or YouTube Premium subscription.”
Keep Deep Think: $99.99 or $199.99 a month. AI Ultra prices the two tiers as “$99.99 / month: 5x higher usage limits vs. AI Pro” and “$199.99 / month: 20x higher usage limits vs. AI Pro.”
The billing terms are the same for all three. The plans page says “Cancel anytime. No refunds for partial billing periods, except as required by applicable law.” Google AI plans are sold through Google One, so the cancel path and the storage downgrade rules are the ones in our Google One cancellation guide. The Subscription Tracker already carries the three Google AI rows if you want to add one to your monthly total.
Where the documents disagree or leave gaps
The plans page has not caught up. On October 7 the US plans page still described the Free tier as “Access to 3.6 Flash” and “Varying access to 3.1 Pro.” The change notice gives Free one model. Until the marketing page is updated, the help page is the one with the date.
Two dates for the same change. Free users get “October 9th.” AI Plus users get an email. Nothing says the Plus date is later or earlier, only that it is personal.
Model names differ by page. The change notice says Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The limits page says Gemini 3 Flash-lite, Gemini 3 Flash, and Gemini 3 Pro. The plans page says 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro. The limits page also warns: “Model names, versions, and availability may change.”
Limits can move without a notice like this one. The limits page says “Limits may change without notice, including due to capacity constraints.” The October 9 change is about which models you can pick, not how much you can use them.
Deep Think for Pro is a report. See above. Google’s pages, as of October 7, list it under Ultra only.
Before October 9
This is a sequence of things to check, not a recommendation:
- See which model you actually pick. The model menu in the Gemini app shows what you have used; if it is already Flash-Lite most of the time, nothing changes for you on October 9
- If you use Flash or Pro without a plan, the free path ends October 9. The next step up for Flash is AI Plus at $4.99; for Pro it is AI Pro at $19.99
- If you are on AI Plus and use Pro, watch the inbox tied to the account. Google’s date for you arrives by email, and the notice does not give a fallback date
- Count the bundle before you pay for a model. Plus and Pro include storage and, on Pro, YouTube Premium Lite, which may replace something you already pay for or may not activate at all
- Remember the limit behavior. Paying does not remove limits; it multiplies them, and at the ceiling paid users drop to Flash-Lite until the five-hour or weekly window resets
- Know the exit. “Cancel anytime” and no partial-period refunds, with the storage downgrade consequences in the Google One guide
Quick answers to what people search

Bottom line
As of October 7, 2026, Google’s help center gives the Gemini free tier one model from October 9, takes Pro away from the $4.99 AI Plus plan on an emailed date, and leaves AI Pro and AI Ultra as they are. Flash costs $4.99 a month to keep, Pro costs $19.99, and Deep Think stays at $99.99 and up. Check which model you really use before October 9, read the bundle before paying for a model, and keep the help page, not the plans page, as the reference until the two agree. The four Google AI tiers, with the bundled storage and YouTube plans valued, are in our Google AI Plus vs Pro vs Ultra guide.
Dates, model tables, and wording quoted from the two Gemini Apps Help pages and the US Google AI plans page linked above, all read on October 7, 2026. Google says limits, model names, and availability may change without notice, so check the help page before you decide. This is general information, not financial advice.
