Claude vs ChatGPT: Price, Plans and Usage Limits Compared (October 2026)
ChatGPT starts at $8 with Go, Claude at $17 billed yearly. Both sell a $20 tier; ChatGPT Pro runs $100 to $500, Claude Max $100 or $200. Limits, context and ads compared.
Claude and ChatGPT sell their subscriptions on different ladders, and the ladders only line up at one rung. As of October 9, 2026, ChatGPT’s cheapest paid plan is Go at $8 a month, a tier Claude does not have; both companies then sell a $20 plan, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, with Claude discounting its own to $17 a month when you pay $200 for a year; and at the top ChatGPT Pro runs $100, $200 or $500 a month against Claude Max at $100 or $200. Beneath the prices, the two meter usage differently: Claude publishes a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit on every paid plan, while ChatGPT publishes per-plan feature tiers and a context window table, and plans to put ads in its Free and Go tiers. This guide sets the two side by side from their own pages: prices, what each tier adds, how the limits work, context windows, models, and the fine print on discounts, ads and API access. Each service’s plans are covered on their own in our Claude Pro vs Max guide and ChatGPT plans guide, and Google’s tiers join them in our three-way comparison.
The quick answer
- Free: both have one. ChatGPT Free offers “Unlimited text chats with GPT-6” subject to guardrails with limited uploads, images and voice; Claude Free offers chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution and memory
- Cheapest paid: ChatGPT Go, “$8 per month” in the US; Claude has nothing below Pro
- The $20 rung: ChatGPT Plus “$20/month (billed monthly)”; Claude Pro “$20 if billed monthly” or “$17” a month “with annual subscription discount ( $200 billed up front)”
- Top tiers: ChatGPT Pro at “$100,” “$200” or “$500” a month, “Your choice of 3 usage tiers”; Claude Max “From $100” a month, “Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro”
- Limits: Claude’s paid plans carry “a session limit that resets every five hours, and a weekly limit that resets once a week”; ChatGPT’s Pro tiers carry per-model allowances, with Fast mode consuming them “at 2.5 times the rate”
- Context: Claude’s paid plans “support up to a 1M token context window”; ChatGPT’s table tops out at “400K” on Pro
- Ads: OpenAI plans “to begin testing ads in the free tier and ChatGPT Go in the US soon”; Plus and Pro “will remain ad-free”; Claude’s pages mention no ads

The ladders: $8 on one side, $17 on the other
OpenAI’s Go announcement sets the three ChatGPT prices in one list: “ChatGPT Go at $8 USD/month,” “ChatGPT Plus at $20 USD/month,” “ChatGPT Pro at $200 USD/month,” with Pro since split into tiers. Go is pitched at “people who want expanded access to our latest model” at a lower price, with “10x more messages, file uploads and image creation than the free tier.”
Anthropic’s pricing page starts paid plans at Pro: “$17” a month “with annual subscription discount ( $200 billed up front). $20 if billed monthly,” then Max “From $100” a month. The Pro plan article adds that there are no other ways down: “We do not offer standard discounted pricing for any of our paid plans, including Pro plans,” though “We occasionally run limited-time promotions.”
By our math, a year of Claude Pro costs $200 against $240 for ChatGPT Plus, and a year of ChatGPT Go costs $96, which Claude cannot match at any tier.
What the $20 tier buys on each side
ChatGPT Plus adds, per OpenAI’s pricing page, “Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6,” “Expanded messages and uploads,” “More complex and accurate image creation,” “Expanded deep research,” “Expanded memory and context,” “Projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs,” “Expanded Codex usage” and “Early access to new features.” OpenAI’s model help page says the GPT-6 family is “rolling out in Chat to eligible Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business users,” while “GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for Free and Go users.”
Claude Pro adds “More usage,” “Hand off and schedule tasks,” “Claude Dashboards (beta),” “Claude Code,” “Claude Science,” “Projects,” “More Claude models” and “Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365.” The feature table marks Claude Code, Claude Science, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365 as No on Free and Yes on every paid plan.
The overlap is projects, scheduled work and wider model access. The divergence is where each company points its $20 user: OpenAI toward its reasoning models and custom GPTs, Anthropic toward Claude Code and the Chrome and Office integrations.
The top tiers: three Pro prices, two Max multipliers
ChatGPT Pro is “From” $100 with “Your choice of 3 usage tiers.” OpenAI’s Pro tiers article lists “$100,” “$200” and “$500,” the last being “Pro 500, a new $500/month plan that includes GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast and GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast.” Pro’s feature list includes “Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra,” “Dot, your always-on agent,” “Unlimited and faster image creation” and “Maximum memory and context.” Speed costs allowance: “Fast mode uses your included allowance at 2.5 times the rate, and Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol uses it at 8 times the rate.”
Claude Max is simpler: “Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro,” at $100 and $200, with “Higher output limits for all tasks,” “Early access to advanced Claude features” and “Priority access at high traffic times.” Anthropic’s Fable models, per the Fable article, “are available on all paid plans,” but on Max they are “included as a standard part of your plan” up to 50% of the weekly limit, while on Pro they run on pay-as-you-go usage credits.
By our math, $200 a month buys 20x Pro usage at Claude or the middle Pro tier at ChatGPT, and ChatGPT’s $500 tier has no Claude counterpart.
How the limits actually work
Anthropic publishes the mechanism. The limits article describes usage limits as a “conversation budget” affected by “the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, which Claude model you’re chatting with, and the effort level you’ve selected.” The usage credits article states the two clocks: “Paid plans include two usage limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, and a weekly limit that resets once a week.” Past them, “With usage credits enabled, your work continues on usage credits instead of stopping.”
OpenAI publishes allowances rather than clocks. On Pro, “Model allowances vary by tier. At a model’s limit, it may be unavailable until its allowance resets. ChatGPT displays the reset time when available,” and “Usage depends on the model, the amount of context processed, reasoning, tool use, information retrieval, caching, and speed mode.” On Plus, the help page says only “Use more messages and broader model options than on the Free plan,” and that availability “changes during rollouts.” Neither company publishes message counts.
Context windows: 1M versus 400K
Claude’s limits article: “On paid plans, the newest models support up to a 1M token context window, while others support 500K or 200K tokens,” with automatic summarization in long chats when code execution is on. ChatGPT’s pricing table lists “GPT Instant total context window” at 27K for Free, 54K for Go and Plus and 128K for Pro, and “GPT Reasoning total context window” at 256K for Go and Plus and 400K for Pro. By our math, Claude’s largest paid window is 2.5 times ChatGPT’s largest.
Ads, discounts and the API
Three fine-print items separate the two. Ads: OpenAI says “We plan to begin testing ads in the free tier and ChatGPT Go in the US soon,” and “ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise will remain ad-free”; the Go card on the pricing page already carries “This plan may include ads.” Anthropic’s pages do not mention ads. Discounts: Claude has the $17 annual rate and no other standing discounts; ChatGPT’s pages list no annual price. API: Claude’s Pro article says “The Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console,” and ChatGPT’s consumer plans are likewise separate from OpenAI’s developer billing.
Where the pages differ or need a second look
Different units. Claude’s 5x and 20x are multiples of Pro’s usage, and its pricing page adds that Pro itself “gives you at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free.” ChatGPT Go’s 10x is measured against the free tier, and the Pro tiers are described by model allowances, not multiples.
Pro 200 changed. OpenAI’s tiers page says new Pro 200 subscriptions “include a lower usage allowance than previously offered with Pro 200,” at the same $200 price.
Fable on Pro costs extra. It is available on every paid Claude plan but included only on Max; Pro users pay usage credits for it.
Ads are a plan, not a launch. OpenAI’s wording is “plan to begin testing,” in the US, on Free and Go.
Prices before tax. Claude’s page: “Prices shown don’t include applicable tax.” OpenAI’s Go price “is localized in some markets.”
Both change often. Anthropic: “Price and plans are subject to change at Anthropic’s discretion.” OpenAI: model availability “changes during rollouts.”
Before you choose
This is a list of things to check, not a recommendation:
- Need the cheapest paid tier? Only ChatGPT has one at $8, and it may show ads
- Paying $20? Claude’s annual rate cuts it to $17 a month if you commit $200; ChatGPT Plus has no annual price listed
- Heavy user? Compare Claude Max’s 5x or 20x against the ChatGPT Pro tier that matches your models, and note Fast and Ultrafast burn allowance faster
- Long documents? Claude’s paid plans reach 1M tokens on the newest models; ChatGPT Pro reaches 400K for reasoning
- Want Anthropic’s Fable models? Included on Max up to half the weekly limit; on Pro they draw usage credits
- Need the API? Neither consumer plan includes it; both bill developer usage separately
