Walmart Return Policy: 90 Days, the Shorter Windows and No-Receipt Rules
Walmart gives 90 days, but phones get 14, electronics 30, appliances 2 and plants 365. Holiday buys from October 1 return until January 31. Every window and refund rule.
Walmart’s return policy is one sentence long until you reach the exceptions, and the exceptions are where most returns are won or lost. The policy on Walmart’s corporate site, marked “Updated: October 9, 2026,” gives “90 days after purchase or upon receipt to exchange or return an item unless noted in our exceptions.” The exceptions then set six other clocks: 2 days for major appliances, 14 for most wireless phones and luxury items, 30 for consumer electronics and most Marketplace items, 60 for prescription glasses and contacts, 90 for a list that includes tires and the Walmart+ membership, and 365 for perennials, shrubs and trees. On top of that sits the holiday rule: “Most items purchased between October 01 through December 31 are returnable until January 31.” This guide lays out every window, what happens without a receipt, how fast each payment method is refunded, and which items can never come back. The same windows set against Amazon, Target, Costco and Best Buy are in our return windows comparison.
The quick answer
- Default: “90 days after purchase or upon receipt,” with a store receipt or Walmart.com order number, refunded “to the original form of payment”
- Shorter clocks: 2 days major appliances; 14 days most wireless phones and Marketplace collectibles or luxury items; 30 days consumer electronics, PCs, vacuums, e-bikes, heating and cooling, AppleCare+, protection plans and most Marketplace items; 60 days prescription glasses, contacts and hearing aids
- Longer clock: 365 days for “Perennials, Shrubs, Trees (returned in-store only)”
- Holiday window: purchases from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31, with exceptions including wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances and Dyson products
- No receipt: valid government photo ID required; if the verification system accepts it, the refund is “a Walmart gift card,” and Walmart limits how often you can do it
- Refund speed: cash is immediate; credit and debit cards “Up to 7 days”; Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance “Up to 3 hours”
- Never returnable: firearms and ammunition, prescription medications, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards and prepaid cards, trading cards, precious metals, downloadable games and software, among others

From Walmart’s corporate return policy updated October 9, 2026, read October 10, 2026. Store managers keep “final authority to accept or decline any item that is eligible for return.”

The 90-day rule, and what it needs from you
The corporate policy states the default and the paperwork together: “You have 90 days after purchase or upon receipt to exchange or return an item unless noted in our exceptions. Please provide your store receipt or Walmart.com/Walmart Business order number and we will refund your purchase to the original form of payment.”
Four ways to return: “Return items in-store or curbside, for free by mail or schedule a pickup with FedEx. Walmart+ Members have additional home pickup options as part of their membership.” The membership’s own refund and pause rules are in our Walmart Plus guide.
One boundary is drawn before any window applies. Walmart’s help page says “Items purchased from dealers or resellers and not Walmart or Walmart.com directly aren’t eligible for return, refund, or exchange.”
The shorter windows, category by category
The policy’s “Shortened Refund Windows & Exceptions” section opens with “Certain items must be returned within below number of days to obtain a refund or exchange,” then lists them.
2 days: major appliances. Full-size refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, ranges, cooktops, washers, dryers and similar. The appliance guide adds that these are “returnable for a full refund within 2 days of accepted delivery,” that “Major appliance returns are not accepted in stores,” and that an unopened one has a longer road: “Unopened, uninstalled, undamaged major appliances in original, factory sealed packaging are returnable up to 30 days after delivery,” with Marketplace appliance returns “subject to up to a 20% restocking fee.”
14 days: most wireless phones, and Marketplace collectibles or luxury items. Walmart defines luxury as “Items above $300 that are new, or preowned apparel, shoes, accessories (e.g., purses, sunglasses) jewelry, and watches,” plus fine art, loose gems, collectibles and memorabilia at any price.
30 days: the long list. AppleCare+, cooling and heating products, consumer electronics, electric bicycles and scooters, hoverboards, most Marketplace items, PCs and PC components, Verizon postpaid wireless phones, vacuums and floorcare, and Walmart Protection Plans. PCs carry an extra condition: they must go back in original packaging, and after 30 days Walmart points you to the manufacturer’s warranty.
60 days: vision and hearing. “Contact Lenses,” “Hearing Aids,” “Prescription Glasses,” “Prescription Contacts.”
90 days, named anyway. “Walmart+ Membership (Unless used or activated),” home and garden equipment such as mowers and pressure washers, tires, photo prints and personalized items, and toilets.
365 days. “Perennials, Shrubs, Trees (returned in-store only).”
Exchange only, and never returnable
Some opened items can be swapped but not refunded: unlocked opened wireless phones within 14 days, drones and projectors within 30, and air beds, power generators and durable medical equipment such as crutches and walkers within 90. The footnote matters: “*New, unopened items can be returned for a full refund.”
The final sale list is longer, and it applies to Walmart and Marketplace sellers alike. It includes firearms and ammunition, prescription medications and devices, airsoft and BB guns, pepper spray, pregnancy and home diagnostic tests including COVID-19 tests, gas-powered recreational vehicles, diabetic supplies, used or mounted tires, trading cards opened or unopened, precious metals, alcohol, tobacco, prepaid phone and gaming cards, gift cards and SIM cards, and video on demand and downloadable games or software.
The holiday window: October 1 to January 31
Walmart’s guarantee reads: “Extended Holiday Returns: Most items purchased between October 01 through December 31 are returnable until January 31. Some exceptions may apply (e.g., wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and select seasonal and luxury goods).” The help page puts it the same way and adds “Marketplace seller participation varies.”
By our math, something bought on October 1 gets 122 days instead of 90, and something bought on December 31 gets 31 days instead of 90. The holiday rule lengthens early purchases and shortens late ones, and the exceptions list means a phone bought in November still has its 14-day clock.
No receipt: photo ID, then a gift card
Walmart tries to find the purchase first: “No receipt? We can attempt to look up store purchases with a debit/credit card or online orders with a phone number or email.” If that fails, the non-receipted rule applies: “To return or exchange items without a receipt, the customer must present a valid government-issued photo ID. Information from the customer ID is stored in a secure database that Walmart uses to authorize returns. If the refund verification process accepts the return, a Walmart gift card will be issued.” The policy adds that Walmart “limits the number and frequency of non-receipted returns,” and the fine print says “All non-receipt returns are subject to a refund verification process.”
Gifts sit in between. “Items on a gift receipt can be exchanged, refunded to a Walmart Gift Card, or credited to the sender’s original method of payment. Items without a gift receipt can be exchanged or refunded to a Walmart Gift Card.”
How fast the refund arrives, by payment method
Walmart’s refund table, for receipted returns inside the window:
| Paid with | Refunded as | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Cash or check | Cash | Immediate |
| Credit card | Same card, or Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance | Up to 7 days |
| Debit card with PIN | Same card, or gift card, Walmart Balance or cash | Up to 7 days |
| Walmart gift card | Gift card or Walmart Balance | Up to 3 hours |
| PayPal | PayPal, cash or gift card | Up to 7 days |
| EBT card | EBT card | Typically within 7 days |
| Pay by Bank | Bank account | Up to 7 days |
Two footnotes change the destination. If Walmart cannot refund the original card, a store purchase becomes store credit on a Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance, and an online purchase goes to Walmart Balance. And “Refunds processed back to a debit/credit card without a receipt may take up to 7 business days.” If a card refund has not shown up after that, our refund timing guide covers what the bank side adds.
Marketplace sellers: 30 days and their own rules
Items sold by third parties on Walmart.com run on a shorter default and a different responsibility line. “Most items are returnable within 30 days,” and the seller, not Walmart, is responsible for processing, shipping, returns and customer service on the order, including return shipping costs. Their policies can add “possible restocking fees (up to 20%),” and some items “are not eligible for return to a Walmart store,” typically freight, oversized, hazardous, collectible or luxury goods. Once the seller receives an eligible return, it has 2 business days to verify it, and the refund goes “back to the customer’s original method of payment within 7 business days.”
Where the documents disagree or need a second look
Phones: 14 days, except Verizon postpaid. The help page says flatly “Wireless phones are returnable within 14 days.” The corporate list says “Most Wireless Phones” at 14 days and puts “Verizon Postpaid Wireless Phones” at 30.
Appliances: 2 days or 30. Both figures are on the same page. Two days for an accepted delivery, up to 30 for a sealed, uninstalled box, and after that the manufacturer’s warranty.
Batteries and fuel. “Items that include a rechargeable battery (e.g., tools, drills, lawn equipment, laptops, eBikes, etc.) must contain the original battery to qualify for a return,” and fuel-powered items should be drained. “DO NOT remove Freon from AC units.”
Bundles. “Items that are part of Consumer Electronics or Collectible bundles must all be returned together to receive a refund.”
Private brands. “Private brand items that include a satisfaction guarantee or promise on the package are not subject to the 90-day return or exchange period noted above.”
Abuse monitoring. “Walmart reserves the right to deny returns that show signs of excessive use, alteration, or abuse,” and it monitors “excessive, repetitive, or abusive return behavior.”
Sales tax in three states. A receipt with a valid transaction number is required for a sales tax refund on returns “in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.”
Before you return
This is a sequence of checks, not a recommendation:
- Find the window for the category first. Phones 14 days, electronics 30, major appliances 2, plants 365, everything else 90
- Check the holiday rule if you bought after October 1. Until January 31 for most items, but phones, protection plans, appliances and Dyson products are excepted
- Bring the receipt or order number. Without it, Walmart will try a card, phone or email lookup, and after that it is photo ID and a gift card
- Keep the battery in and the fuel out. Rechargeable items need the original battery; fuel items should be drained
- Major appliances go through the app or walmart.com/returns, not the store. Inspect at delivery; the 2-day clock starts when you accept it
- Marketplace items: read the seller’s policy. 30 days, possible 20% restocking fee, and the seller handles the return

Bottom line
Walmart’s 90 days hold for most things, but the policy updated October 9, 2026 runs six other clocks, from 2 days on a delivered appliance to 365 on a shrub, and the October 1 to December 31 holiday rule stretches most purchases to January 31 while leaving phones, appliances and protection plans on their short windows. With a receipt or order number, the money goes back the way it came, within 7 days for cards; without one, it is photo ID, a verification check and a gift card.
