Lowe's Return Policy: 90 Days, 48 Hours on Appliances, Receipt Required

Lowe's gives 90 days on new, unused items but no returns without proof of purchase, 48 hours on appliances, 30 days on electronics and mowers, 365 on credit accounts.

Lowe’s return policy has one rule most retailers soften and Lowe’s does not: “Lowe’s does not accept returns or exchanges without a valid proof of purchase.” Around it sit four clocks. As of October 10, 2026, Lowe’s gives 90 days for “Most new, unused merchandise,” 48 hours for major appliances, air conditioners, paint sprayers and tile saws, 30 days for TVs, electronics, liquid paint, water heaters and most outdoor power equipment, and 365 days for trees, shrubs and perennials and for purchases on Lowe’s credit accounts. Holiday decorations must be back by the holiday itself, and special-order products carry a 20% restocking fee after 72 hours. This guide sets out every window, what counts as proof of purchase, how refunds are paid by payment method, and the items that never come back. Home Depot’s rules, which look similar until the receipt question, are in our Home Depot return policy guide, and five more retailers are compared in our return windows comparison.

The quick answer

  • Most items: 90 days from purchase, “new, unused merchandise,” “with receipt”
  • Proof of purchase: required, no exceptions stated; Lowe’s can look up a receipt by order number, payment card, phone number or rewards account, and may ask for photo ID
  • 48 hours from delivery or pickup: major appliances, air conditioners and evaporative coolers, paint sprayers, tile saws, construction heaters, utility vehicles, golf carts and motorized bikes; also gas generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws
  • 30 days: liquid paint, TVs and electronics, water heaters, HVAC systems, most outdoor power equipment, custom blinds, and plants other than trees, shrubs and perennials
  • 365 days: trees, shrubs and perennials, and purchases made with Lowe’s commercial and rewards credit accounts
  • Holiday items: returnable “on or before the day of the holiday”; bought after it, final sale
  • Special orders: 20% restocking fee if returned or cancelled after 72 hours
  • Refund timing: up to 7 business days to your account; large cash or check refunds may come as a mailed check

The 90-day rule, and the receipt that is not optional

Lowe’s returns page states the default: “Most new, unused merchandise can be refunded or exchanged with receipt within 90 days of the original purchase date, unless noted in our Return Policy Exceptions.” Returns with valid proof of purchase go back “to the original method of payment,” with the exceptions covered below.

The proof rule has its own heading. “Lowe’s does not accept returns or exchanges without a valid proof of purchase.” A paper receipt is not the only way to prove it: “We can attempt to validate your purchase using the following methods: physical or electronic receipt, order number, payment card or digital wallet, phone number, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Account or MyLowe’s Rewards Account.” Verification can add an identity check: “We use refund verification systems, which may require a valid picture ID (state driver’s license, state ID card or military ID).” Gifts follow the same line: “You can return the item with the original receipt as long as it meets the return window guidelines.”

48 hours: appliances, coolers, saws and vehicles

The shortest window is counted from the handoff: “Return must be initiated with Lowe’s within 48 hours of delivery or the time of pickup at a Lowe’s location.” It covers major appliances, listed as “Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, ranges, range hoods, dishwashers, over-the-range microwaves, cooktops, wall ovens, washer and dryer pedestals,” along with portable and window air conditioners and evaporative coolers, construction heat and parts, paint sprayers and tile saws. Motorized purchases have an extra condition: “Utility vehicles, golf carts, go-karts and motorized bikes must be returned to a Lowe’s store in the original state of purchase with original paperwork, including title (if applicable).”

Gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws also sit at 48 hours, and Lowe’s marks them as “not eligible for the 30-day credit extension.” That extension is the one escape hatch for the rest of the list: “Items returned in original, unopened, undamaged, factory-sealed packaging or unused if not sold in packaging may be returned within 30 days of delivery or the time of pickup,” and purchases on Lowe’s credit accounts “may be returned within 30 days of delivery or the time of pickup.”

30 days: paint, electronics, yard tools and most plants

The 30-day list is long. Special-order custom blinds and window treatments, liquid paint, TVs and electronics, water heaters and HVAC systems, plus the yard: annuals, house and patio plants, Bonnie Plants, augers, chippers, cultivators, edgers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, log splitters, shredders, snow blowers, subcompact tractors and their attachments, tillers and trimmers. One brand is carved out: the list “Excludes CRAFTSMAN® branded battery and electric outdoor power equipment items, which have a 90-day return policy.” So a battery CRAFTSMAN mower has 90 days and a gas mower from another brand has 30, by Lowe’s own exception.

365 days: trees, shrubs, perennials and credit accounts

Two groups get a year. Plants: “a receipt is required for any tree, shrub or perennial purchased at Lowe’s within one year of the original purchase date. All other plants fall under our 30-day return policy.” Payment: purchases on a Lowe’s Commercial Account, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit, the MyLowe’s Pro Rewards American Express Card, the MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card or Lowe’s Business Rewards “May be returned within 365 days of the date of purchase, unless noted below,” which means the 48-hour and 30-day lists still apply to those items. Lowe’s Pay financing is excluded from the extension.

Holiday items, special orders and the never list

Holiday decor runs on the calendar, not a day count: “Christmas and Halloween items must be returned on or before the day of the holiday. Items purchased after the holiday are final sales, and no returns will be accepted.” By our reading, a wreath bought December 26 cannot be returned at all.

Special orders carry a fee and a location rule: “Special Order configured products returned or canceled after 72 hours from purchase are subject to a 20% restocking fee. Must be returned to the store where the product was purchased.” The fee is taxed in some states and “applies to installed sales unless otherwise provided in your installation contract or Right to Cancel.”

The nonrefundable list: labor; installation charges; “Delivery and/or shipping charges (unless due to Lowe’s error)”; in-store credits and refund cards; merchandise cards; any gift card; safety masks or facial coverings; highway trailers; whole house generators; as-is merchandise; paint samples; trading cards; and items with a biohazard risk, which “cannot be returned once used, regardless of current condition.”

How the refund comes back, by payment method

Card and most other payments return to the original method. The exceptions are specific:

  • Check: “Refunds within three (3) days of purchase will be as in-store credit.” After three days, cash or in-store credit as the verification system decides; amounts over $1,000 “may be refunded by check, sent by mail”
  • Cash: refunds over $1,000 “may be refunded by check sent by mail (in Lowe’s discretion)”
  • Delivered, phoned or online orders paid by cash or check: refunded “via refund voucher to the email address on the original purchase within 24 hours of processing,” redeemable for cash in any store “with photo ID that matches the name on the refund”
  • Gift card, refund card, merchandise card or store credit: “Refunded as in-store credit”
  • Lowe’s Pay: credited to the financing institution, which “will manage the refund process with you directly”; cannot be refunded to cash or store credit
  • MyLowe’s Money: back to the digital wallet

On timing, Lowe’s FAQ says: “Once your return is complete, please allow up to 7 business days for the funds to be credited to your account, depending on your financial institution.” If it has not arrived after that, our refund timing guide covers the bank side.

Outlet stores, marketplaces and mail returns

Lowe’s Outlet locations work differently: “Except for permitted returns, all sales are final and may not be returned.” The permitted returns are major appliances with “mechanical or electrical damage or defects that deem the appliance non-functional,” within 48 hours of taking possession, and only at the same outlet. Cosmetic damage and wrong size do not qualify, and regular-store purchases cannot go to an outlet or the reverse.

Orders placed through Instacart, DoorDash, Shipt or Uber “can only be returned with proof of purchase to any Lowe’s retail store,” within 90 days with exceptions, and the refund is “the item’s price and associated tax as in-store credit.” Third-party sellers on Lowe’s site follow the same guidelines as Lowe’s own merchandise. Mail returns exist only when a label does: “You can mail back an online purchase, if the FedEx label is provided.” Otherwise online and store purchases go back to any Lowe’s store, and appliances and oversize items can be brought to the nearest store or arranged for home pickup by phone.

Where the page is silent or needs a second look

No receipt, no return, no store-credit fallback. Unlike Walmart, Target or Home Depot, Lowe’s page offers no store-credit route for returns without proof of purchase. The lookup methods are the only cushion.

Verification can block a receipted return. Refund verification systems “may require a valid picture ID,” and refund form for checks is set “as determined by refund verification systems.”

Holiday decor has no grace period. The deadline is the holiday itself, and anything bought after it is final sale.

BOGO returns are prorated. “The purchase discount will be prorated to each item proportionately,” so returning one item of a pair refunds less than its sticker price.

Price drops after purchase. Lowe’s FAQ points to its Lowest Price Guarantee: “If you find a current lower price on an identical in-stock item from another local retailer, we’ll match the price,” including “the price of the item(s) plus shipping or delivery cost,” on requests “submitted directly from the person who made the purchase.” The exclusions run from clearance, open-box and seasonal items to third-party marketplace sellers, membership wholesalers, rebates and bundle offers.

Policy tests and written copies. “Written copies of Lowe’s Return Policy will be provided upon request,” and “You are entitled to a written copy of the store’s return policy.”

Before you return

This is a sequence of checks, not a recommendation:

  1. Find proof of purchase first. Receipt, order number, the card you paid with, your phone number or a rewards account; without one, Lowe’s page says no
  2. Check the clock. 48 hours for appliances, coolers, saws and vehicles; 30 days for paint, electronics, water heaters and most yard tools; 90 for most else; 365 for trees, shrubs, perennials and credit account purchases
  3. Sealed 48-hour items get 30 days. Keep the factory packaging intact if there is any chance of a return
  4. Holiday decor goes back by the holiday. After it, there is no return at all
  5. Special orders: decide within 72 hours. After that, 20% restocking at the store that sold it
  6. Paid by check or cash on a delivery? Expect a refund voucher by email, cashed in store with matching photo ID

Can I return paint to Lowe’s? Liquid paint has a 30-day window; paint samples are nonrefundable.

What is Lowe’s return policy on plants? Trees, shrubs and perennials for one year with a receipt; all other plants 30 days.

Does Lowe’s charge a restocking fee? 20% on special-order configured products returned or cancelled after 72 hours from purchase.

Can I return Christmas decorations to Lowe’s after Christmas? No. Items must be returned on or before the holiday, and items bought after it are final sale.

How long does a Lowe’s refund take? Up to 7 business days once the return is complete, depending on your bank.

Bottom line

As of October 10, 2026, Lowe’s gives 90 days on new, unused merchandise, 48 hours on appliances, coolers, saws and motorized vehicles, 30 days on paint, electronics, water heaters and most yard equipment, and a year on trees, shrubs, perennials and credit account purchases, all of it conditional on proof of purchase that Lowe’s will look up but will not waive. Holiday decor has to be back by the holiday, special orders cost 20% after 72 hours, and refunds land within about 7 business days.
