Amazon Return Policy: 30 Days, the Exceptions, Fees and Refund Timelines

Amazon gives 30 days from delivery, 7 or 15 for some items, up to 365 for others. Late returns lose 20% then 100%, damage up to 50%, and cards refund in 3 to 10 days.

Published

Amazon’s return policy is one number most people know and a dozen they do not. The 30 days from delivery is on the first line of Amazon’s policy page, read October 10, 2026, and so is the condition: “original or unused condition.” Everything after that is where returns go wrong. Some items get 7 or 15 days, others 90, 180 or 365. A return dropped off after the “return by date” costs 20% of the price for the first 30 days and 100% after that. A damaged or used return can lose up to half its value. And the refund itself can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours on a gift card balance to 30 days on a prepaid card. This guide sets out every window, fee and timeline on Amazon’s page, with the arithmetic Amazon does not do. The same windows set against Walmart, Target, Costco and Best Buy are in our return windows comparison.

The quick answer

  • Default: “within 30 days of delivery as long as they are in original or unused condition,” for refund, replacement or exchange
  • Shorter windows: 7 days for accidental Kindle, digital textbook and Alexa music purchases; 15 days for Apple and Boost Infinite products sold new, and Amazon Haul items over $3
  • Longer windows: 90 days for most nonperishable baby products, mattresses, some Amazon Renewed items and gift list purchases; 180 days for wedding registry gifts; 365 days for Renewed “Premium” items and baby registry gifts
  • Refund timing: gift card balance 2 to 3 hours; credit card 3 to 5 business days; debit card, checking account, EBT and cash up to 10 business days; prepaid credit card up to 30 days
  • Late fee: 20% of the item price for the first 30 days after the return by date, then 100%
  • Damage fee: up to 50% of the item price, 100% for Amazon Luxury items
  • Restocking fee: 100% for opened software, video games, collectible cards, board games and chase figurines
  • Never returnable: perishables, customized products, Amazon Pharmacy and pet medication, certain digital products, automobiles, redeemable products, and anything marked “Final Sale”

Windows and timelines from Amazon’s return policy page, read October 10, 2026. Amazon adds that “It can take up to 30 days for us to receive and process your return” before any of those timelines start.

Diagram: Amazon return windows and fees in October 2026, most items 30 days from delivery in original or unused condition with free drop-off at more than 8,000 places, shorter windows of 7 days for Kindle and Alexa mistakes and 15 days for Apple and Haul items, longer windows of 90 days for baby items, mattresses and Renewed and 180 or 365 for registries, a late fee of 20 percent of the price for 30 days after the return-by date then 100 percent, and refund timing of 3 to 5 days for credit cards, up to 10 for debit and 30 for prepaid, with the note that damaged or used returns can carry a fee of up to 50 percent

The 30-day rule, and the condition attached

Amazon’s policy page states it in one sentence: “Most items can be returned for a refund or replacement/exchange within 30 days of delivery as long as they are in original or unused condition.” The clock starts at delivery, not at the order, and the condition is not decorative: the damage fee section below is where “used” gets priced.

Amazon’s own timeline runs on top of that. “A refund will be provided if Amazon (or the third-party seller) has received the item, and determined that you are eligible for a refund. It can take up to 30 days for us to receive and process your return.” So the refund method timelines in the table above begin only after that processing, which Amazon says can itself take up to a month.

The shorter and longer windows

Three groups get less than 30 days. Seven days covers “Digital books accidentally purchased from the Kindle Store that have not been read,” digital textbooks and educational content “that have not been downloaded,” and “Songs or albums accidentally purchased from our Digital Music Store using Alexa.” Fifteen days covers “Apple Brand products and Boost Infinite Brand products sold in new condition” and “Items sold in the Amazon Haul store that are over $3,” with Haul items of $3 or less “non-returnable and non-refundable.”

Four groups get more. Ninety days: select Amazon Renewed products in Acceptable, Good or Excellent condition, “Most nonperishable Baby products,” items bought from a birthday or custom gift list by someone other than its owner, and “Mattresses (excluding crib mattresses).” One hundred and eighty days: wedding registry gifts bought by someone other than the registry owner. A full year: Renewed products in “Premium” condition and baby registry gifts bought by someone other than the owner.

The registry rule has a catch in its wording. The longer windows apply to purchases “by someone other than the registry owner,” so an owner buying from their own registry is on the standard 30 days.

What cannot be returned at all

Amazon’s non-returnable list: perishables, “Products that may pose potential health and safety risks if returned,” products with shipping restrictions, “Customized products made specifically for you,” redeemable products, Amazon Pharmacy products, pet medication, certain digital products, and automobiles. On top of that, products listed as “Final Sale” are non-returnable and non-refundable, Amazon says, “including trading card games, specific discounted items, and items sold in the Amazon Haul store that are $3 and less.” The one escape hatch: if a non-returnable or Final Sale item arrives “damaged, defective, or materially different from what was ordered,” Amazon says to contact Customer Service.

The fees: late, damage, restocking and shipping

Amazon opens the fee section with “While returns are generally free, certain situations or item conditions may incur fees,” and notes that a returned item “cannot be sent back to you after it has been returned,” except some Luxury items.

Late fee. Charged when you do not drop off the item, or complete a carrier pickup, on or before the return by date. The amount is 20% of the item price for the first 30 days after that date, and 100% of the item price afterwards. By our math, a $100 item dropped off a week late is refunded at $80, and the same item dropped off 31 days late is refunded at nothing.

Damage fee. Charged for an item “that is damaged, missing parts, not in original condition, has tags removed or have obvious signs of use for reasons not due to an Amazon.com or seller error.” The amount: “Up to 50% of the item price, except for Amazon Luxury items, which will be charged 100% of the item price.”

Restocking fee. “100% of the item price” for “Software and video games that are opened, activated, used, or missing parts” and “Opened collectible cards, board games/table top games, collectible/chase variant figurines.” Opening the box is the trigger.

Return shipping fee. “Most items include at least one free return shipping option,” but you may be charged if you pick a paid option, return a heavy or bulky item, or “You have an unusually high return rate.” Heavy or bulky means “Weigh 50 lbs or more,” a packed longest side over 59 inches, or girth over 130 inches, and such returns “may incur a return shipping fee that is variable based on the item’s weight, dimensions, and handling requirements.”

Discounts. “If you return an item that was part of a discount qualification, we will reduce your refund to account for the return.”

Where to drop it off, and what to send back

Amazon’s pitch on logistics: “You can return most items for free at over 8,000 convenient locations, typically within a 5-mile radius of your address. Additionally, most returns do not need to be boxed or labeled.” The condition line is the one to read before dropping off: the item should be “in original or unused condition with tags attached and hygiene seals and liners intact, and in the original manufacturer’s packaging.” Items from separate orders should not share a return, and devices with personal data should be wiped first.

Bundles come back whole or not at all: “You must return all items purchased in a Bundle with Savings to receive a refund. Partial refunds are not available.”

Third-party sellers, gifts and Global Store

When a seller ships its own stock, “your return is sent back to the seller instead of Amazon.” Amazon requires the seller to offer one of three things: a US return address, a prepaid return label, or “A full refund without requesting the item be returned.”

For gifts, you start from the Returns page with the 17-digit order number on the packing slip or digital gift receipt; “If you can’t locate the order number, ask the gift giver.” An exchange means returning the gift and placing a new order. Kindle books received as gifts can be swapped for a gift card “before acceptance.”

Global Store returns run slower: “It can take up to 25 days for an item to reach us once you return it,” then two business days to process and 3 to 5 for the refund to show. Amazon “will automatically refund up to $20 for return postage costs on receipt of the item,” and the full postage plus the Import Fees Deposit if the item was defective, damaged or incorrect.

Where the page is silent or needs a second look

Holiday extension. The policy page carries no holiday window. Amazon publishes seasonal extensions on its news site instead: for last season, “most items purchased between November 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31, 2026,” with Apple-branded products “accepted through January 15, 2026.” A 2026 announcement had not appeared on either page as of October 10, 2026; our comparison guide tracks it.

“Unusually high return rate” is undefined. It is a trigger for a shipping fee, with no number attached.

Processing time versus refund time. The method timelines, 3 to 5 days for a credit card and up to 10 for debit, start after Amazon has received and processed the return, which it says can take up to 30 days.

Photo ID. “Amazon may require additional information and documentation (such as a government-issued photo identification) during the processing of a return,” and it reserves the right to deny returns or impose fees to prevent abuse.

Warranties are not returns. Amazon points warranty questions to the manufacturer and notes a manufacturer warranty “may not cover used products offered on Amazon.com.”

Before you return

This is a sequence of checks, not a recommendation:

  1. Find the window for the item. 30 days from delivery for most things, 7 or 15 for the digital and Apple cases, 90 to 365 for baby items, mattresses, Renewed and registries
  2. Watch the return by date. Dropping off after it costs 20% for 30 days and then everything
  3. Keep it in original condition. Tags, seals, packaging and parts; used or damaged items can lose up to half the price
  4. Do not open software, games or collectibles you might return. Opened ones carry a 100% restocking fee
  5. Check whether it is heavy or bulky. 50 pounds, 59 inches or 130 inches of girth can add a shipping fee and a carrier appointment
  6. Expect the refund after processing. Up to 30 days to receive and process, then 2 to 3 hours to 30 days depending on the payment method

Bottom line

As of October 10, 2026, Amazon’s 30 days run from delivery and require original or unused condition, with shorter clocks for digital mistakes, Apple and Haul items and longer ones for baby products, mattresses, Renewed and registry gifts. The costs of getting it wrong are on the same page: 20% then 100% for lateness, up to 50% for damage, 100% for opened software and collectibles, and a refund that starts its 2-hour to 30-day journey only after Amazon’s own processing, which can take up to 30 days.
