Claude Pro vs Max: Price, Usage Limits, and Fable Access in October 2026

Anthropic sells two individual Claude plans above the free tier, and as of October 8, 2026, the price gap between them is larger than the feature gap. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month when you pay $200 up front for a year; Max is $100 a month for five times Pro’s usage or $200 for twenty times. Both run on the same two clocks, a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that resets on a day assigned to your account, and both can keep going past those limits with pay-as-you-go usage credits. The difference that matters most for the newest models: Max includes Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 for up to half of the weekly allowance, while Pro users pay for Fable through usage credits only. This guide lays out the prices, the limits, and the Fable rules from Anthropic’s pricing page and five help center articles. The quick answer

  • Pro: “$20 per month (US),” or on the pricing page “$17” a month “with annual subscription discount ( $200 billed up front)”
  • Max: “$100 per month” for Max 5x and “$200 per month” for Max 20x, which the pricing page sells as “Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro*”
  • Two limits on every paid plan: “Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours,” and a “weekly usage limit that applies across all models”
  • Past the limit: usage credits let Pro and Max subscribers “continue using Claude after reaching their included usage limits” on pay-as-you-go pricing
  • Fable models: available on all paid plans, but included only on Max, where “You can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable”; on Pro they draw on usage credits
  • No discounts, no API: “We do not offer standard discounted pricing” on paid plans, and “The Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console.”

The prices, on two pages

The pricing page shows three columns. Free is listed at $0, “Free for everyone.” Pro is listed at $17, with the caption “Per month with annual subscription discount ( $200 billed up front). $20 if billed monthly.” Max is listed as “From $100” a month with the line “Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro*”. The footnote on both paid columns is the same: usage limits apply and prices exclude tax.

The help center is the second source and it is more exact about billing. What is the Pro plan? says “The Pro plan is available for $20 per month (US), with pricing in your local currency where supported,” and “Annual subscriptions are billed once yearly at a discounted rate.” What is the Max plan? lists “Max 5x : $100 per month” and “Max 20x : $200 per month,” and settles the discount question: “We do not offer standard discounted pricing any of our paid plans, including Max 5x and 20x plans.” Moving up a tier mid-cycle is prorated: “When upgrading from a lower to a higher tier, your account will be charged on a prorated basis for the remainder of your billing cycle.”

One thing Pro does not buy: “The Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console.” Max is different in kind, not just size: “Claude Max and Team plans include monthly credits for the Claude API.”

What “5x” and “20x” measure

The pricing page’s “5x or 20x more usage than Pro” is defined in the Max article as a per-session multiple: Max 5x includes five times, and Max 20x twenty times, the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance. Sessions are the first clock: “Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours.” The second clock is weekly: “Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models,” and for Pro, “Pro plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models. Weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account.”

What a “message” costs against those limits is not fixed. The usage and length limits article says usage depends on the length and complexity of the conversation, the features used, the model chosen and the effort level selected, and that long chats cost more: “Longer conversations that trigger automatic context management consume more of your usage limit.” Both paid plans also carry the discretionary clause: Anthropic “may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion.”

Length limits are a separate thing from usage limits. “On paid plans, the newest models support up to a 1M token context window, while others support 500K or 200K tokens.”

Past the limit: usage credits

Neither plan has to stop at the ceiling. The usage credits article says “Usage credits allow individuals subscribed to paid Claude plans (Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x) to continue using Claude after reaching their included usage limits,” switching to pay-as-you-go pricing once the session, weekly, or Fable weekly limit is used up. They are not the same as Max’s API allowance: “Usage credits are separate from the monthly API credits included with Max plans.” And a setup catch for app subscribers: “If you subscribed through one of the Claude mobile apps, you can only enable usage credits on the web version of Claude.”

Fable: included on Max, pay-as-you-go on Pro

The Fable article is the clearest line between the two paid tiers. “Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 are available on all paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise).” But “available” and “included” differ. On Max, “You can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable” as a standard part of the plan. On Pro, Fable 5 and 5.1 are not part of the plan’s included usage; you can use them only with usage credits, paying for that usage on top of the subscription. A promotion that let subscribers use half their weekly limit on Fable 5 “ended on July 19, 2026 at 11:59:59 PM PT.”

So for a Pro subscriber who wants Fable regularly, the real price is $20 plus whatever the usage credits cost, while a Max 5x subscriber has Fable inside the $100.

Where the documents disagree or leave gaps

$17 or $20. The pricing page leads with “$17” for Pro, which is the annual rate paid as “$200 billed up front”; the help article prices Pro at “$20 per month (US)” and describes the annual plan only as “a discounted rate” without a figure.

“More usage” versus “5x.” The pricing page’s Pro column says “More usage*” than Free, with no multiple; the Max multiples are stated as per-session allowances in the help center, not as weekly ones.

No numbers for the limits themselves. Neither page publishes how many messages a session or week allows; usage is defined by conversation length, features, model and effort level.

Weekly reset is per account. The reset is “a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account,” so two subscribers can have different reset days.

Fable on Pro is not free. The pages agree, but the pricing page’s feature grid does not flag the usage-credit requirement; it is in the Fable article.

Before you choose or upgrade

This is a sequence of checks, not a recommendation:

  1. Decide monthly or annual before paying for Pro. The $17 rate requires $200 up front; monthly is $20
  2. Count your sessions, not your messages. The five-hour session limit and the weekly limit are the only two meters on both plans
  3. If Fable is the point, compare $100 Max against $20 Pro plus usage credits. Max includes Fable up to half the weekly limit; Pro bills it through credits
  4. Enable usage credits on the web if you subscribed in the app. The toggle is not in the mobile apps
  5. Upgrade mid-cycle only if you need to. It is prorated, but there are no discounts on any paid tier
  6. Keep the API separate. Pro has no API usage; Max’s monthly API credits do not count as usage credits

How much is Claude Pro? “$20 per month (US),” or $17 a month on an annual plan billed as “$200 billed up front.”

How much is Claude Max? “$100 per month” for Max 5x and “$200 per month” for Max 20x.

What does 5x mean on Claude Max? Five times the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance; Max 20x is twenty times. Sessions reset every five hours, and a weekly limit also applies.

Does Claude Pro include Fable? Fable 5 and 5.1 are available on Pro, but not inside the plan’s included usage; on Pro they run on usage credits. Max includes Fable for up to 50% of the weekly limit.

What happens when I hit the Claude usage limit? With usage credits enabled, requests continue on pay-as-you-go pricing; otherwise you wait for the five-hour session or the weekly reset.

Does Claude offer a student or annual discount on Max? No. Anthropic says it does not offer standard discounted pricing on any paid plan, including Max.

Does Claude Pro include the API? No. “The Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console.” Max plans include monthly API credits.

Bottom line

As of October 8, 2026, Claude Pro is $20 a month or $17 on a $200 annual plan, and Max is $100 or $200 for five or twenty times Pro’s per-session usage, with the same five-hour and weekly clocks on every paid plan and usage credits to keep going past them. The deciding line for most buyers is Fable: included on Max up to half the weekly limit, pay-as-you-go on Pro. Pick the plan by how many sessions you run and whether Fable is in them, and read the reset time in your own settings, because it is assigned per account.
