Spotify Plans Compared: Individual, Duo, Family, Student Price, Audiobooks
Spotify Premium is $12.99, Duo $18.99, Family $21.99 for six, Student $6.99 with Hulu, Audiobooks Access $9.99. What each plan includes and the audiobook hour rules.
Spotify has four Premium plans and one plan that is not Premium at all, and its own pages carry one savings figure that no longer matches its prices. As of October 10, 2026, Spotify’s US Premium page lists Premium Individual at $12.99 a month, Premium Student at $6.99 with Hulu (With Ads) included, Premium Duo at $18.99 for two accounts, and Premium Family at $21.99 for up to six, each with “Cancel anytime” and none with an annual price. Separately, the Audiobooks Access plan is $9.99 a month for 15 hours of audiobooks with music left on the free, ad-supported tier. This guide sets out what each plan includes, the per-person arithmetic Spotify does not print, the audiobook hour rules that differ by plan, and the student offer’s terms. If you are leaving, the steps are in our Spotify Premium cancellation guide.

What Premium adds over free
Spotify’s Premium page lists four things the paid plans add. “Ad-free music listening,” described as “All the music, without all the ads.” “Lossless music” with “sound quality up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.” “Offline listening,” where you “Download thousands of songs, or let Offline Backup do it automatically.” And “Play songs in any order,” meaning “Repeat songs, play albums in any order, and skip as many times as you want.” The free tier’s page says only “It’s free. No credit card required.”
Every Premium plan card ends with “Cancel anytime.”
Premium Individual: $12.99, and the one-month offer
The card reads “$0 for 1 month,” then “$12.99 / month after,” for “1 Premium account” with “15 hours/month of listening time from our audiobooks subscriber catalog.” The offer has a condition: “Offer only available if you haven’t tried Premium before.” Returning subscribers pay $12.99 from day one.
Premium Student: $6.99 with Hulu, for up to four years
The student card is “$6.99 / month after” the free month, for “1 verified Premium account” with “Access to Hulu.” Spotify’s student page spells out what that means: the offer “currently includes access to Hulu (With Ads), subject to eligibility,” and you watch in Hulu’s own app, not inside Spotify.
Eligibility, in Spotify’s words: “If you are a student enrolled at an eligible US Title IV accredited college or university, and above the age of 18, then yes.” Verification runs through SheerID. The term is one year at a time: access lasts “for up to 12 months from the date you subscribed,” and “students can re-verify their eligibility once every 12 months, for a maximum of 3 additional 12 month periods.” That is four years in total.
Existing Hulu subscribers can sometimes fold their account in. Spotify says that if you subscribe to Hulu (With Ads) without premium add-ons and pay Hulu directly rather than through Roku or Amazon, your existing Hulu account can be included.
Duo and Family: the per-person arithmetic
Premium Duo, $18.99. “Two people, two separate Spotify Premium accounts for $18.99, all in a single bill,” for “couples who reside at the same address.” By our math that is $9.50 each, and $6.99 a month less than two Individual plans at $25.98.
Premium Family, $21.99. “Up to 6 Premium accounts,” “Parental controls over all plan members,” and “Plan members under 13 get Premium benefits,” for “up to 6 family members residing at the same address.” At six accounts that is $3.67 each by our math. Family is also cheaper than two Individual plans, so at two people the only reason to pick Duo over Family is the $3.00 a month difference.
Both plans put the audiobook hours on one person: “15 hours/month of listening time from our audiobooks subscriber catalog (plan manager only).” Spotify’s family page adds that “Unused listening hours expire at the end of each month and do not carry over.”
Audiobooks Access: $9.99 for books, free tier for music
Spotify’s audiobooks page prices it as “Spotify Audiobooks Access $9.99 per month”: 15 hours a month from the subscriber catalog, while “Your music listening experience will be on our free, ad-supported service.” The support article is blunter: “This plan doesn’t include any other Premium features,” and it is “available in the US only.” It is “not currently supported on certain devices including Apple Watch, Garmin, Samsung Watches, Tesla, and Car Thing.”
Switching between this plan and Premium is not instant in either direction. To buy it as a Premium subscriber, “you first need to cancel your plan and wait for your current Premium to end.” To go the other way, “you need to cancel your current Audiobooks Access plan and wait for it to end.”
By our math, Audiobooks Access at $9.99 is $3.00 less than Individual at $12.99, and Individual includes the same 15 audiobook hours plus ad-free music. The $9.99 plan only makes sense for someone who wants the books and does not want to pay for the music.
Audiobooks+ and the October 20 trial deadline
For Premium subscribers who run out of hours, the add-on is “Audiobooks+,” which gives “15 extra hours every month, on top of what billing subscribers get with Premium.” Spotify’s page describes it as “a paid subscription for $11.99/month after the trial period, billed on top of your existing Premium plan.” The current promotion: “Try Audiobooks+ Free for 3 Months,” and “Offer ends Oct 20, 2026, new Audiobooks+ subscribers only.”
Two rules travel with it. “You can cancel Audiobooks+ anytime without cancelling your Premium plan, but if you cancel your Premium plan, all add-ons you have will also be cancelled.” And “Unused add-on hours expire on a monthly basis.” Spotify also sells a separate add-on for plan members and hour top-ups, without printing their prices on this page.
Where Spotify’s pages disagree with themselves
The student saving is 50 cents short. The student page says “Save up to $17.99/month,” then lists Spotify Premium as “Normally $12.99/month” and Hulu (With Ads) as “Normally $12.49/month.” Those two prices add to $25.48, and $25.48 minus $6.99 is $18.49, not $17.99. By our math the headline matches Hulu’s previous $11.99 price, not the $12.49 Spotify itself now lists.
Audiobook hours on the Student card. The Individual, Duo and Family cards each list 15 hours; the Student card does not mention audiobooks. The audiobooks page says Premium hours “are available to Premium Individual subscribers, and Duo and Family plan managers only.”
No annual billing. Every US plan is monthly on Spotify’s page.
“Up to” lossless. Spotify states “up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz”; which tracks reach that is not on the page.
Free trial scope. “$0 for 1 month” appears on the Individual and Student cards only; Duo and Family show no trial.
Before you pick a plan
This is a list of things to check, not a recommendation:
- Two people at one address? Duo is $18.99 and Family is $21.99, both below two Individual plans at $25.98 by our math
- In college and 18 or over? $6.99 includes Hulu (With Ads), for up to four years with yearly re-verification
- Only want audiobooks? Audiobooks Access is $9.99, but music stays ad-supported and switching to or from Premium means cancelling and waiting
- Need the audiobook hours on more than one account? On Duo and Family only the plan manager gets them
- Thinking about Audiobooks+? The three-month free trial for new subscribers ends October 20, 2026, then $11.99 a month
- Returning to Premium? The free month is for people who have never tried Premium
